Sempervivum ‘Aglow’
4″ pot
Hens and Chicks are some of the most familiar garden perennials. They form a low clump of fleshy leaves where tiny new plants will appear in a circle around the mother, which is in the middle. This variety “Aglow” is a mat-forming succulent. The leaves of this succulent are fuzzy looking and feel velvety. In colder months the leaves are a deep olive-green, almost brown color, and in the Summer have a terracotta orange shade. The inner leaves are green and as the leaves fan out become the terracotta orange shade, which will mature to that brown shade, in the Winter. Most known for its unusual foliage color.
Sempervivums are comprised of one large rosette called the “hen” which will then sprout many smaller rosettes around it called the “chicks”. As the plants age, the hen may die out and be replaced by the chicks. Plants can be easily divided and replanted. Particularly used for borders, containers, rock gardens, or as ground-covering. Sempervivums are monocarpic.
Prefers soil that is dry and well-drained. Will be drought tolerant once established. Heat tolerant and actually prefers poor soil (neutral or alkaline soil), over soil that is too rich or heavy clay. They have a slow growth rate. Gets to heights of 4 inches and a spread of 8 inches. Surprisingly cold hardy, Sempervivums need little maintenance once established, and will survive near total neglect.

Hens and Chicks are some of the most familiar garden perennials. They form a low clump of fleshy leaves where tiny new plants will appear in a circle around the mother, which is in the middle. This variety “Ruby Heart” is a mat-forming succulent. The leaves of this succulent are fleshy, sharply pointed, and have a wonderful colouring. The colour will vary from season-to-season, but will intensify in cooler temperatures. The leaves are silvery blue, flushed ruby-red at their base. The Hen will spread in all directions by horizontal stems to form her chicks. Each chick will develop roots of its own and become independent of the parent plant. In the Summer a thick flowering stalk will arise from the centre of the hen and bears showy, starry, pinkish-purple flowers.
