This an update about the ongoing planning process Prairie Gardens is undertaking to comply with Sturgeon County requirements, and to invite you to learn more and share any thoughts you may have. As part of the County’s recent land‑use updates, we have been encouraged by Administration to apply for AG‑2: Agriculture Intensive redistricting. This zoning more accurately reflects the existing agritourism, greenhouse, horticultural, and educational activities that already occur on our family farm and supports our long‑term agricultural diversification on our small farm of 20.5 acres.
What This Means
· There is no expansion planned. This application simply aligns our current operations with Sturgeon County’s Diversified Agriculture land‑use bylaw.
· No new major activities are being proposed. We remain committed to our established programming:
o Spring Garden Centre
o School Field Trips and Junior Farmer Educational programs
o Farm‑to‑Fork Experiences
o U‑Pick Strawberries & Vegetables, and CSA program
o Fall Apple Orchards, Sunflowers, Small Corn Maze & Pumpkin Harvest Festival
o Winter production, agritourism, and Christmas farm-to-table dinners and workshops
· Agriculture remains our primary focus — including tree nursery operations, fruit and vegetable production for our seasonal farm market, Upick and our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) baskets, our seasonal garden centre, and hands‑on educational and agritourism programming.
· The redistricting aligns our long‑standing uses — since 1956 as a tree nursery and since 1984 as an agritourism farm — within the County’s updated planning framework, which recognizes that agritourism operations will experience higher activity during peak seasons (51 – 675 vehicles per day, including our farm tractors).
Our Commitment as Your Neighbour
We value being part of this community and remain committed to being good neighbours. This includes:
· Managing traffic during peak times with timed entry
· Maintaining reasonable hours
· Minimizing noise and dust and permeable parking adequate for the number of guests
· Creating local employment opportunities
· Protecting shelterbelts, soil, and water resources
· Providing a direct contact for any concerns
