Sambucus canadensis americana ‘Berry Hill’
Pot Size: #1
Selected by Lewis Hill, Berry Hill is a very vigorous grower with a smaller mature size is smaller than other cultivars. Fruit is extremely dark and somewhat small. Best used to make syrups, juices, or jams and jellies. Fruit is known for its extremely high concentration of vitamin C and antioxidants. Do not eat raw or underripe as fruit is acidic and astringent and can cause stomach aches if not processed.
Plant in a sheltered location with ample snowfall. Adding 1-3′ of mulch around base is recommended in the fall to help overwinter. It is not uncommon for elderberries to die down to the snowline over the winter and start with new growth in the spring.
Requires a second elderberry for cross-pollination such as: Adams, Kent, York, or American.
