Success for Growing Plums on the Prairies

The secret sauce to success on the prairies with plums has three ingredients. The first is variety selection. Picking the right variety for your climate is essential to long term success. The second is location. Plums should be planted where the snow is late to melt in the spring, such as on a north slope. This delays bloom time to avoid late spring frosts. The third is pollination. Plums are notorious for being difficult to properly pollinate. The solution? A wild Canada plum seedling.
