Full sun, partial shade, attracts birds, zone 2
Alnus viridis crispa
Pot size: #2
Native to cooler North American climates. Coarse, finely toothed, oval green foliage and inconspicuous yellow-green to brown blooms in spring followed by red catkins. Tolerates dry and rocky soils; thrives in wet soils. Nitrogen-fixing reclamation plant.
Amazingly, Green Alder catkins can be harvested and ground for culinary purposes, including five-spice mixes for cakes. Very tasty in chocolate desserts or when roasting vegetables, soups, and meats. The flavour is strong, so use sparingly.
