The Bleeding Heart is an herbaceous perennial and has a mounded form. The name is a nod to the flowers that are heart-shaped and dangle from the stems. The Old Fashioned Pink Bleeding Heart variety is known for being vigorous and the flowers that bloom are delicate and are pendulous clusters of bright-pink locket shaped flowers that form in late Spring. The foliage is golden yellow, delicate in nature, and finely cut in texture. This variety is extremely striking with the nodding bright pink heart-shaped flowers with the white centers that will dangle from the stems. This plant is recommended for use in mass planting, rock gardens, border edging, and container planting.
The Old Fashioned Bleeding Heart will grow to be about 35 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 35 inches. When grown in masses individual plants should be spaced approximately 24 inches apart. The foliage of this plant tends to remain low to the ground and dense. It grows at a slow rate, but does tend to go dormant in summer. The bleeding heart prefers average to moist conditions, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. It is not specific to soil pH, but grows best in rich soil.
