Large canopy of coarse branches with long green leaflets and edible nuts. Bark is heavily ridged and foliage turns bright yellow in fall. Drought tolerant once established in a moist, well-drained soil. We recommend planting in a location that has some shelter from the wind.

Well-known its delicious nuts, the black walnut has sweet and aromatic flesh with a hint of spice. Excellent for making pies. The shell of the walnut itself smooth, round, and highly fragrant. Also sought for its medicinal properties, this nut boasts a high count of essential minerals and fatty acids. As an added bonus, the hulls also have antibacterial properties.

Please note: walnuts produce a substance called juglone in their roots, nut shells, and leaves. Juglone inhibits the growth of most fruit trees, and native species such as larch and pine, so you should choose your planting location carefully.
