Description
A Journey Through Storytelling, Farming, Foraging & Food
“Flavors of the Farm” celebrates the culinary traditions and cultural heritage of our community through a series of monthly gatherings and collaborations with a Horticulturalist and Farmer, an Indigenous Storyteller, and an Expert Pickler.
Each event focuses on a different culinary technique—from fire roasting to pickling to preserving—and invites participants to share their family recipes and the stories behind them.
Objective: This series aims to do more than just share stories. It’s a vibrant forum for weaving together our community’s stories, culinary wisdom, and artistic expression. By participating, community members contribute to a living cookbook that captures the essence of Prairie Gardens diverse identity.
Goals of the Project:
- Foster Community: Strengthen community bonds through shared culinary sessions and storytelling, celebrating our collective heritage.
- Showcase Diversity: Highlight the rich cultural diversity of our region, bringing to the forefront the varied culinary traditions that thrive within our neighborhood.
- Preserve Heritage: Keep our unique food traditions alive by documenting ancestral techniques and recipes in a community cookbook, ensuring they endure for future generations.
- Promote Health: Encourage healthier lifestyles by showcasing how to utilize local, fresh produce in everyday cooking.
What to Bring to In-Person Sessions:
- Recipes: Share your cherished family or cultural recipes at our gatherings. Whether they’re time-honored traditions or innovative dishes that spotlight local ingredients, your recipes are a vital part of our community tapestry.
- Photos and Drawings: Enhance our storytelling sessions by bringing photos or drawings that capture the essence of your culinary heritage or special moments related to your recipes. These visuals help bring stories to life and deepen our communal connections.
