Developed at the University of Minnesota, in 1999. It is known for its earlier ripening season and makes it an easy apple to start growing early; yet also being capable of growing in cold Northern climates. The apples produced are round with an average diameter of 3 inches. The taste is described as being crispy, sweet, tangy, with a unique brown sugar taste, and with skin that is dark red hue and areas of skin that is yellow-to greenish. In addition to its great taste it is also praised for its storage quality.

Requires another apple nearby to cross-pollinate. The sweet/spicy taste of the Zestar makes it excellent for snacking, as well as for baking pies, sauces, and applesauce.
