Definitely a farm favourite, cochins were originally brought over from China to Britain in the 1850s under the name “Pekin.” The Golden-Laced Cochin is an extremely docile, friendly breed and are ideal pets for children! In fact, a bantam cochin was the very first pet Laurel Andersen (Owner’s daughter), ever had – and they hooked her on chickens ever since. Cochins are also extremely broody, which means they like to sit on eggs and hatch out chicks. They are fantastic mothers and many a chicken at the farm has been raised by one of our cochin mamas. They lay around 100-150 small white eggs a year. Our cochins range from black to gold – some will have distinctive gold-lacing, and others will have a range of unqiue patterns, making for an interesting collection!
Month:
- Chicks are ready at the end of each month. For example, if you select “May” as your month, your chicks will be ready for pick-up by the end of May.
Sex:
- Unsexed (“straight run”) chicks have not been sexed. In our experience, we have found the 50-50% rule to hold true in large groups. Please note: if you order a few chicks (less than 25 of one breed, for example), the chances of even ratios of male to female increase. Unsexed chicks are $15ea.
In the case that a chick is not available at hatch, you will have the option of 1) Choosing a substitute, or 2) Choosing a later hatch date.
